The 2006 Wings Over Whiteman AFB Air Show

June 18, 2006

These photos were taken by me, Fred Bruenjes, at the 2006 Wings Over Whiteman AFB Air Show. Whiteman is probably most well known as the home to the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber fleet, and is one of the few (if only) air shows where one can walk right up next to a Stealth Bomber. All air show or special event flyovers in the USA by B-2's are staged from here at Whiteman.

US Army Golden Knights Parachute team performed a "low show".

John Klatt in his Staudacher S-300D.

AH-64 Apache helicopters did a simulated attack.

John Mohr took off from the flight line in a Stearman, and performed a show low and close to the audience.

Kent Pietsch feigned a midair collision and in-flight emergency in his Interstate Cadet.

For people not expecting it, this was a heart-stopping and scary performance.

Ray Vetsch in the Turbo Shark SU-26.

John MacGuire did aerobatics in his Piper Cub.

Warren Pietsch cuts ribbons.

Double Vee, an AT-6 used by the Tuskeegee Airmen, preps for a race with Scott Hammack's jet car.

Red Storm MiG-17.

A-10 Warthog.

Here, the P-51 Mustang flew with the A-10 in a Heritage Flight.

Look out - a Havard Mk IV, painted as a Japanese Zero, makes an appearance.

The P51 chases the Zero.

The Golden Knights jumped again in the afternoon.

The Lima Lima T-34 six ship aerobatic team flew in formations normally reserved for top notch military jet teams.

Lima Lima painted a hurricane in the sky.

Kent Pietsch performed an engine-off glide from high altitude, to a pinpoint stop right in front of the crowd.

The loudest act of the day was the F-18 Super Hornet, seen here on the verge of breaking the sound barrier.

B-25 Mitchell bomber Special Delivery.

B-17 Flying Fortress bomber Thunder Bird.

Finally what the hometown crowd has been waiting for: the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber Spirit of Kansas!
Epilogue: Sadly, this aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Guam on February 23, 2008, becoming the first B2 to be lost from the fleet. Thankfully the pilots ejected with only minor injuries.

Spirit of Kansas returns home to Whiteman after a long day appearing at air shows around the country.

B-2 Spirit of South Carolina.
